“What in the African diaspora is happening in South Florida?”
Crabs. Conversations. Votes. In WPB
July 18 @ 12:00 am
The last day to register to vote in Palm Beach County in the next upcoming election is July 20–two days after this event, today, in West Palm Beach. Suits for Seniors, an eight-week mentoring program for high school seniors, is a main sponsor, while the League of Women Voters will act as onsite registrar. Event sponsors are also seeking social service vendors. The event happens at a critical time for lots of reasons, including that a federal judge ruled in mid-June that Florida’s ex-felons will have the right to vote in the general election November 3, thanks to the passage of Amendment 4 and that judge’s decision that killed the ‘poll tax’ law created after the Amendment’s statewide approval. Another matter: will the young, activist millennials and the ‘Generation Zers’ see the critical importance of registering–and of actually voting? Even as they organize and participate in this ‘new civil rights movement.’ That’s part of the point of this event: a community conversation about something that is ever-more important–and have fun at the same time. For more information about anything, send an email here or call 321-604-7590. And those crabs? That’s thanks to another main sponsor, GM Caldwell Foundation (aka Chef Boris), which works with individuals and families to help improve their lives. Learn more about it here and, about Suits for Seniors, here.
