‘An Evening With the Stars’ in Riviera Beach
June 29, 2019 @ 5:30 pm$25.00
The Industrial/Roosevelt High School National Alumni Association and Friends, Inc. is hosting ‘An Evening with the Stars’ today at the Fayson-Mitchell Multi-Purpose Christian Center at Hurst Chapel in Riviera Beach. It will feature vocal performances, poetry readings and live music. The event is in support of the local nonprofit, which works to ensure the memories, stories and, well, history, of the schools are saved. And they have a history. Both had been segregated high schools that, despite that unequal treatment, still ensured achievement for their students. Industrial was created in 1917 as the first high school in Palm Beach County for African-Americans and was converted to an elementary school in 1950 when Roosevelt was created to replace it. Roosevelt graduated its last class in 1970, the year PBC began the process to integrate its schools (though segregation was outlawed by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1954). Today, Industrial is now U.B. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary School of the Arts, named for a storied principal, and Roosevelt remains standing, thanks to the students who attended it and Industrial. So, tonight, they celebrate and have fun. Tomorrow, the push continues. For more event information, call 561-313-3087 or 561-635-9948. The $25 entry fee is a donation. So go. Learn. Have fun! And who’s that in the picture? The Industrial High School Class of 1941.
